About Potatoes

Potatoes are tubers and they grow from “seed potatoes”. Seed potatoes look like regular potatoes but they have not been chemically treated to prevent sprouting and are disease resistant. You can plant potatoes you purchase at the grocery store, but they may not grow and are more prone to disease. To learn more about potatoes, click here.

  1. I think this is the first time I see Radishes on my schedule. Do you always just start them outside?

  2. Yes, most root vegetables don’t do well transplanting them. Same with carrots, turnips, etc.

  3. So the carrots that you mention is this carrots from seed or transplants?
Thanks for your site! It is great…

  4. From seed–they don’t do well from transplants because they are a root vegetable.

  5. Oh, I was so hoping this would work for my Zone 3 garden….however I still have a solid (and I do mean solid) one and a half to two feet of snow left in the back yard, I can’t even tell where the garden is (and I’m barely above sea level). Guess I won’t be starting my transplants for a while yet….I thought blue group was last frost May 3 – 9, I may have just not understood. Fun site anyway!

  6. Susan–snow would indicate that it’s a little early to start planting! Did you follow the instructions here http://www.mysquarefootgarden.net/color ? Either you have the wrong frost date and color group or you are having a VERY cold spring! The frost date is the average date of temps at freezing–I would say your temps are still freezing if you have feet of snow on the ground! I’m wondering if your frost date might be later.

If your frost dates are outside of the color groups the weekly emails won’t really help, but I do have a custom dates Planting by Color e-book. It contains the same info, and you fill in the appropriate dates.

  7. I am wondering if you have planted your broccoli yet. You have it on the schedual for a couple weeks ago but I know you have had some late snow (as have we in Boise) so I have not planted mine yet. I asked my local nursery and they have a little bit different plant dates then you have for some plants (they told me to plant broccoli the last week of April) Also, my starts are still very small (just getting their second leaves) and I am wondering if I should just by some.

  8. I have not planted broccoli–I don’t trust the weather yet! Also, my plants only have 3, almost 4 true leaves. You want them to have 4-6 before transplanting. Whether to buy or not is tricky–on one hand, it could continue to be a cool season, and you’ll have plenty of time to grow broccoli. Or, “normal” temps could come back and the cool-weather plants will bolt (go to seed). I’m not a magic-8 ball, so I really don’t know what to tell you. Maybe buy a few, plant them, and then plant your starts in a week or two. Then you’d have your bases covered.
