2008 Garden, Second Week of February
Okay, I jumped the gun by a couple of days. Today I bought seeds, and started some. I had a lot of leftover seeds from last year (with this method you only use a few seeds from a packet), and I had stored them in the freezer. I compared my plan with what I already had, made a shopping list and headed to IFA. I referred to my list of suggested plant varieties, and when they didn’t carry any of the varieties listed, I asked for advice. I consistently find helpful and fairly knowledgeable employees at IFA, unlike WalMart and Home Depot.
The only things I didn’t find were potato starts, red onions, and garlic. I’ll have to hunt those down later. Here are the plants I started:
- Broccoli
- Cauliflower
- Cabbage
- Jalepeno Peppers
- Bell Peppers
- Anaheim Peppers
- Yellow Onions
I used Jiffy peat moss pellets I bought last year. First I saturated the pellets (I just did the number I needed, not the whole box), then put 3 seeds in each one. I am planning to thin each pellet down to one good plant, and so I doubled the number of plants. I am not sure how well my seeds will sprout and grow, so I wanted to make sure I have enough plants when the time comes.
