2008 Garden, Third Week of March
Most everything has sprouted! Today I transplanted into pots:
- Broccoli
- Cauliflower
- Dill
- Onions
- Parsley
My peppers have not sprouted yet, and I’m trying to not be nervous about it. If they don’t show up soon, I may restart more seeds.
This time I used Miracle Grow potting soil. I put it in a bucket and got it most (not wet) before filling the pots. I was generous in filling the pots, so the soil mounds up and will get a lot of airflow (I hear this helps prevent damping off disease). I gently pulled out the plants with my finger, while loosening the vermiculite with a pencil, and cut off long roots. I poked a hole, plopped them in, and watered. I’m keeping them out of the sun/grow lights for a day or two. I was also meticulous about labeling everything!
I also started my tomato seeds.
I am getting excited to work on my boxes outside, but it’s been cold. I have done some research to find cheap compost, and it looks like the best deal is a truck bed full for $30 (available in Salt Lake county). Prices in Utah county went up, and they no longer run the 2 for 1 special. In the end, it would cost the same as hauling bags from Home Depot, except more of a pain because I’d need to borrow a truck.
