Harvest Time! (and August update)
I love it when it’s finally time to enjoy the fruits, and vegetables, of my labors!!! Yum! In my new Easy Garden box I planted 4 squares of green beans, and we’ve been swimming in them! So far I’ve picked about 4 pounds of beans. The trick with green beans is to keep harvesting them, and to pick them before the seeds get big and bulging. The plant thinks it has not yet reached its goal of putting out seeds, and so it keeps trying–producing a bountiful crop! I have LOVE LOVE LOVED the variety of cucumbers I grew this … Continue reading
Gardening Problems, Solutions, and Update
I’ve been so busy putting together my new fall planting schedule that I’ve fallen behind on giving garden updates. As I compared the pictures to my last update, I was amazed at how much everything grew, and so quickly. This week I’ll take more pictures and you can see how things are looking today! Here is my south-west box–from left to right I have cucumbers (on the trellis), onions, carrots, onions, broccoli (in the back), cilantro (going to seed), and lettuce. I am letting the cilantro go to seed, because I tried that last year and had so much fantastic … Continue reading
The weather is holding. . .
I’m happy to say that we’ve had no snow or hail! The weather swings from hot to cold, with crazy winds in between, but my garden is FINALLY growing. Here’s my full report: From left to right, I am growing cucumbers, onions, carrots, onions, broccoli, parsley, lettuce, and cilantro. I finally got my trellis installed for the cucumbers, and they have all emerged! This garden bed has my peas and potatoes. The potatoes are doing wonderfully. I’ve had to tie the peas to the trellis, because the crazy winds keep blowing them down. One of my tomatoes snapped in two, … Continue reading
Back in the Garden, again. . .
I am tired, achy, and sneezing my head off. I have a little bit of a sunburn and sore muscles everywhere. But I’m so happy to be outside working in my garden. I’m not kidding when I say that up until June 1, not a week went by without hail or snow. I woke up on May 24th to about 4 inches of snow on my poor tomatoes that were hardening off on the back deck. Those of you in Utah know what I’m talking about! But only those who live in Lehi seem to enjoy the generous amounts of … Continue reading
The strike is over. . .
In case you didn’t notice, I went on strike. You see, not a week went by without snow or hail. Seriously!?! I was so frustrated–how can I write about MY square foot garden when I can’t plant anything (or if I do it will be killed by the weather)? So I went on strike. Sorry for not letting you know–but that’s sorta how strikes work. Nobody gives you notice, they just don’t show up. There was a picket line with signs and placards. But that was only in my head. I have been saving up all sorts of things to … Continue reading
Square Foot Gardening Plans–My 2010 Gardening Plan
I just realized that I never posted my 2010 gardening plan, or instructions on how to create a gardening plan. Here’s the first, and the “how to” will be following in a few days. Please note, the colors on here have nothing to do with my Planting by Color schedule. I just have a tendency to color code everything! This year I’ve made the switch–all my spring veggies are on the west side of my yard. These will get full sun all day, but shade in the afternoon. I have found this makes a big difference when the temperatures rise. … Continue reading
What the . . . hail?
Yesterday it was hailing. No joke, hail. I decided last week that I’m not waiting for warm weather to prepare my garden beds–as long as it’s 45 degrees or more, I’m going to do it. And then it hails. And snows. And last night when I tried to write this post–the power went out. My only consolation is that if it’s cold enough to snow, it’s not yet warm enough to grow. So even though I should be able to transplant my broccoli and parsley this week, I’m going to wait until it stops snowing. My peas, onions, and spinach … Continue reading
It’s Not Too Late!
I’m feeling so behind. I live in the Green Group, and for me it’s already week (-6). I have started my broccoli and parsley, but have yet to start my hot peppers, bell peppers, and tomatoes. Outside I should have planted peas and onions. Instead, I have 6 bags of compost in my garage, and garden beds in every kind of disarray. My trellises are outside and ready to go–because I left them there all winter! All spring, the weather has been taunting me. It gets warm one day, and I think, “If it’s like this tomorrow, I’m going to … Continue reading
