I think seed packets assume you’re doing traditional gardening–rows, and hills, thinning and hoeing. Square foot gardening is all about conserving space. I think some plants really do need that much space (peppers, for example), but I have grown oregano, and it can fit in one square just fine, if you ask me. The best teacher is experience–try it out, and adjust next year. Honestly, that’s how/why I started my website. It was a way for me to keep track of what I did and what I learned. :)

Hello, I got the Square Foot Gardening book this spring and just found your site. It’s very helpful! Thanks for all the great info :)
I have a question: the spacing recommended on the plants/seeds I’ve purchased is different that than listed on this site/in the book. For example, the oregano plant I purchased says to plant 18″ apart, but this site says oregano requires one 12″ square.
Are the seeds/plants incorrect? I certainly hope so – otherwise my garden will have to be huge!

Unless you are going to cover the paths between with dirt, rocks, or something else, I would suggest spacing your gardens a little farther apart. At least far enough to fit your mower between, but if you don’t have a bagging attachment, maybe even farther.

I have a question sort of related to your post about mowers. I am just starting out with sfg and am trying to figure out where to place my boxes. The book says that you can let grass grow between the boxes, and to make sure you leave enough room for your mower, but wouldn’t that put a bunch of grass clippings and grass/weed seeds into your garden every time you mow??? I don’t have a bagger, and the photos I see of gardens with this method don’t seem to have a wide enough space for a mower with a bag attachment. I don’t have enough money to put anything between the rows. I do have a lot of yard space, though, so I’m wondering if I should put the boxes further apart, although I’d prefer to have them closer together.
