Building a Square Foot Garden Box (Vinyl)
I decided that 6″ was not enough soil for me, so I’m upgrading to 12″ boxes. I found out my old boxes will not “mix and match” with my new vinyl materials, so basically I’m rebuilding them. They are 4′x4′x12″ (instead of 6″ high). Cost: $27 router (on super sale! at Harbor Freight Tools) ??? bit (need to pay my sister back for this) $223 posts and rails (4-8′ posts, 11-16′ rails, $14 each) $0 borrowed a miter saw $0 jig for routing holes in posts (thanks to my talented brother in law!) Altogether, it will cost about the same to … Continue reading
2008 Garden, Fourth Week of March
I’ve done it! I rebuilt my 3 boxes to be double high. Isn’t that enough for week 6? Just kidding. I also continued to transplant my seed starts–tomatoes, bell peppers, basil. Almost everything is out of vermiculite and growing under my lights.
2008 Garden, Third Week of March
Success #1: I got all the vinyl cut, routed, and ready to build boxes! Here is my son building a “house.” His fun will be over when I actually set up my boxes! Success #2: I purchased all the compost, peat moss, and vermiculite I need!!! Costs: $33.50 peat moss (3 bales @ $10.50 each, 3.0 cu ft) Even though these are only 3.0 cu ft, I expect it to expand to double. $60.65 vermiculite (3 bags @$19 each, 3.5 cu ft) $40 compost (2 cubic yards @ $20 each) $25 caps for my garden posts (12 @ $2 each) Helps … Continue reading

2008 Garden, Third Week of March
Most everything has sprouted! Today I transplanted into pots: Broccoli Cauliflower Dill Onions Parsley My peppers have not sprouted yet, and I’m trying to not be nervous about it. If they don’t show up soon, I may restart more seeds. This time I used Miracle Grow potting soil. I put it in a bucket and got it most (not wet) before filling the pots. I was generous in filling the pots, so the soil mounds up and will get a lot of airflow (I hear this helps prevent damping off disease). I gently pulled out the plants with my finger, … Continue reading

Jodi’s Garden, Second Week of March
I’ve got my cute little indoor greenhouse set up and my plants seem to enjoy it. I don’t have a great sunny location in my house so I try to rotate the greenhouse so my plants don’t lean to the sunshine too badly. It would probably help to get some lights, but it’s not in the budget for this year. I’m following along with the guidelines on this website and planting new things each week. I can finally start some stuff outdoors now so it’s getting really exciting! I sure love spring Outside Planted one square of garlic, 9 cloves. … Continue reading
2008 Garden, First Week of March
I don’t have any photos this week, because it was sad. I don’t know if it was from my peat pellets (they grew a hairy white mold) or contaminated soil I brought in from the garden, but my plants had a green mold growing on them, and there were gnats. I tossed it all, and started fresh. I had sort of jumped the gun originally, so I had lots of time to do this. Another problem–I had not been diligent enough in labeling, and I was unsure which peppers were which! Silly me! Cost: $20 pots ($1 each) $12 potting … Continue reading
2008 Garden, Fourth Week of February
Everything is growing! I am very excited. The other fun news is that I bought lights to help my new seedlings grow: 2 shop lights ($8 each) = $16 1 pack (2 bulbs) cool florescent bulbs = $8 1 pack (2 bulbs) warm florescent bulbs = $8 TOTAL = $32 Here is my setup: So, the top shelf has my jalepeno peppers on the left, and my broccoli and cauliflower on the right (with a few onions). The little tupperware is vermiculite with cabbage seeds sprouting. The bottom shelf is onions in the peat pellets. Just yesterday I transplanted almost … Continue reading
Jodi’s Garden, First Week of March
In the garden: I got ambitious with prepping my gardens this week. I supplemented my compost-filled beds with some peat moss and vermiculite and filled in the remaining space with fresh compost. Pulled some weeds out of the garden and my surrounding paver stones. Planning to start some garlic outdoors this week. Timing on garlic is weird as it does better planted in the fall. But I’m experimenting with it this year by trying it in the early early spring. We’ll see what happens! New Indoor Seedlings: Started some parsley and three varieties of tomatoes in jiffy pots with vermiculite. … Continue reading
