I grew in 6″ the first year, but I did not feel like I could grow good root vegetables like carrots and potatoes. Also, my garden beds are surrounded by gravel and they got too hot. I doubled them the next year, and saw a significant improvement. The final reason I did that was because the soil settles, and you end up growing in more like 4-5″ of soil, which is not enough. So I’m a big proponent of taller beds. It is more expensive to fill with soil, but I feel my improved results were worth it.

I was reading a post where you talked about 14″ high garden beds. When I read Mel’s book he said to stay at 6″ high. What is the best way to go?
